The 2014 pilot season is upon us and Fox has started it off with a bang. Gotham just hit the top of everyone’s list for the most anticipated pilot of the year. In this Batman-related prequel series, we follow a young Jim Gordon at the beginning of his career as a young detective.

The show will feature Gordon grappling with the gradual rise in crime in Gotham as it transforms from thriving metropolis to the troubled city we know so well. Introducing well-known Batman characters in early stages of their lives, Gotham will dive into back-stories in order to show us how they develop into the familiar faces from Batman canon.

Gotham Fox Jim

Detective Jim Gordon played by Ben McKenzie

The trailer introduces Jim Gordon, played by the talented Ben McKenzie, on a case to solve the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, two of the most wealthy and powerful people in Gotham. Witness to the crime is their son, a young Bruce Wayne, who we know will one day become the Caped Crusader. Gordon spends much of the trailer trying to comfort and advise Bruce as he deals with this tragedy.

During the teaser we also see well know characters such as Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, Penquin, Riddler, and Poison Ivy. The trailer shows off some lesser-known villains such as Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, who is a nightclub owner with a dark agenda of gaining power within Gotham.

The show seems to be creating its own take on the world of Gotham. After the incredible storytelling of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, it is a fresh foray into the world of Batman. With superhero shows on the rise, Fox seems to be following CW’s lead with Arrow and giving primetime another look into the DC world.

But Fox better be careful. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D seemed to be a safe bet only to struggle early on with ineffective characters and writing. Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has made something of a turnaround, who knows how fans will react to a prequel series so soon after Nolan’s trilogy while Ben Affleck is poised to pick up the cowl in Superman vs. Batman.
