Ric’s Netflix Picks: “The Untouchables”

Welcome everybody to the wild, almost midwest.

This here is our sheriff, Eliot Ness.

In Prohibition Era Chicago everyone knows that Al Capone (Robert De Niro) is the bootlegging kingpin. The problem is that no one can prove it. Every time the police try to bring him down, Capone manages to get tipped off by someone on the inside. Bureau of Prohibition Agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) enlists the help of the incorruptible beat cop Jim Malone (Sean Connery), who suggests they attack Capone in a different way. Together, the two create a small band of loyal law enforcement officers that Capone cannot buy off: a group nicknamed the Untouchables. Rounding out the team is Officer-in-training George Stone (Andy García) and accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith). They will stop at nothing to bring Capone to justice.

The Untouchables is packed with an all-star cast: Connery, Costner, De Niro and García are all huge names that need no elaboration. They shine tremendously. Patricia Clark (of Lars and the Real Girl, a Ric’s Netflix Pick) plays Ness’s wife Catherine.

The Untouchables is a classic film; one that mildly sensationalizes the actual history. This 1987 movie holds up over time and could stand on its own against modern crime movies.
