Fast Food Review: Burger King Rodeo Sandwiches
As the fast food industry continues to rebrand their menus and raise the prices on their “value items”, Burger King is bucking the trend and continues to release new $1 sandwiches. One of the first items from their recent barrage was the $1 French Fry Burger. The French Fry Burger was exactly what you might expect: a basic hamburger with four French Fries thrown on top. This sandwich was a half-baked idea that didn’t really have enough substance to hold its own. Burger King has nailed it since then though!
The first star of the show was the BBQ Rib Sandwich, which has been available for quite some time and has been making a strong name for itself. The BBQ Rib Sandwich is very simply a mini McRib. You get all the ingredients from the McRib (minus the overabundance of sauce) for a fraction of the price. This sandwich has done so well that it even made my “Top 10 New Items of 2013”!
Sticking to the success of BBQ sauce, Burger King recently released two more $1 sandwiches…Rodeo Style!
Those of you that have been filling up at BK for years may remember the first release of the Rodeo Burger in 1998. Burger King linked the release to the movie Small Soldiers (underrated flick) and began offering a BBQ cheeseburger topped with onion rings for 99 cents.
The burger has been on and off the menu for the past 15 years and is back once again…with one difference. In an effort to keep the burger priced at $1, Burger King has ditched the cheese. The lack of cheese is definitely a downer, but Burger King is always good about adding cheese for you (for a little extra dough). The new-styled Rodeo Burger falls into the category of “what you see is what you get”. It’s a small burger with BBQ sauce and three onion rings. Unfortunately, the onion rings I got on my burger seemed to be the three smallest ones they could find. The flavors were there, but I was not over-impressed with the quality of the production. I’ve been a fan of this burger for years so I will continue to have faith in future attempts, even if this one time was a bit lackluster. You may just want to do yourself a favor and splurge for the cheese when you give it a throw.
Teamed up with the Rodeo Burger is the $1 Rodeo Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich is a combo of the crispy chicken patty, BBQ sauce, and the same three onion rings on a toasted sesame seed bun (still no cheese). I have to say that I enjoyed this sandwich much more than the Rodeo Burger. Once again, the simple ingredient list makes the flavors fairly predictable. However, the combination of the BBQ sauce and the chicken patty worked exceptionally well, and the crispy onion rings provided more depth with a little sweetness from the onions. For the price, you really aren’t going to do much better than this Rodeo Chicken Sandwich.
With all these sandwiches priced at only $1, you can do some serious damage at Burger King without dropping much coin. If you are in the mood for some BBQ flavor and you’ve got a crispy $5 bill, I’m going to suggest grabbing all three of these sandwiches, a value fry or onion ring, and a value drink. Then just sit back and enjoy the ride!
