Ric’s Netflix Picks: “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”
Tired of the typical superhero film?
Try something musically villainous.
Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) is just your average villain with dreams of making it to the big leagues. He chronicles his trials and tribulations in his video blog for the whole world to see. He plots nefarious schemes with the help of his sidekick, Moist (Simon Helberg), and combats his arch nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). Things begin to run afoul when Billy, Dr. Horrible’s shy alter ego, develops a crush on Penny (Felicia Day), an idealistic do-gooder. Due to her, the separate lives of Dr. Horrible and Billy collide, climaxing in a struggle for personal identity.
Joss Whedon‘s Dr. Horrible’s Sign-Along Blog is a great modern musical filled with emotion and hilarity. Written during the 2007-2008 WGA strike, this musical is brimming with “nerd-loved” actors and is written by one of the most respected science fiction writers of the modern age. Be warned, the first 7 minutes or so may be slow, but the payoff becomes enormous by the end. This is a definite must watch.
