Ric’s Netflix Picks: “How To Grow a Band”

Thinking of starting a band?

Here’s how.

How to Grow A Band is the documentary that chronicles the rise of the band Punch Brothers and their frontman, Chris Thile. In 2006, Thile, already a successful bluegrass musician and Grammy winner, was a man without a band. Nickel Creek, his previous band, had decided to call it quits. Not one to waste time, Thile set about gathering a group of musicians to do something new, something different. Punch Brothers was born. Starting out with an ambitious, forty plus minute, bluegrass suite entitled “The Blind Leaving the Blind,” this quartet made noise and ruffled the feathers of the music world. The story of how and why Punch Brothers came together, and where they are going, is an exciting tale that you will enjoy.

I will admit, my ranking of this documentary may be skewed slightly upward because I really enjoy the music. Regardless, this is a great film that will turn you on to some great music.
