Ric’s Netflix Picks: “Wilfred”

How do you know you have a proper grip on reality?

You don’t.

Ryan Newman (Elijah Wood), having survived a failed suicide attempt, answers a knock on his front door. His neighbor, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), needs him to watch her dog, Wilfred. Ryan hesitatingly agrees and Wilfred steps into view, but what he sees is no dog. Wilfred appears to Ryan as a man in a dog suit (Jason Gann).

Such is the setup for one of the most underrated shows currently on television. Starting off every episode with a quote, the show examines various moral themes through the relationship Ryan has with Wilfred. In addition to these thematic tales, a long-form narrative about the nature of Wilfred’s existence evolves. Who is Wilfred? Why is he in Ryan’s life?

The supporting cast of Chris Klein, Allison Mack, Kristen Schaal, James Remar (The Warriors) and Dorian Brown are extremely likable. With a great blend of comedy and character-driven drama, mixed with an appropriate portion of philosophical mystery, Wilfred is one of the best shows I have seen recently.

Look for an array of notable guest stars including Rob Riggle (The Daily Show), Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises), Mary Steenburgen (Back to the Future: Part 3, Step Brothers), Angela Kinsey (The Office (US)), Robin Williams, Eric Stoltz (Caprica), Ethan Suplee (Boy Meets World, American History X, My Name is Earl) and Dwight Yoakam.
